Each participant who successfully completes all class hours and requirements will receive: Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification which is valid for 2 years.  Fees: $300 per person; includes mask OR $175 per person; for re-certifications. Location: Bret Harte High School Aquatic Center

Bring registration form, payment (cash or checks payable to Jennifer Berry) & proof of age. Payment will be due upon successful completion on the prerequisite skills test. To obtain certification ALL class hours must be attended. NO make-up hours will be offered. This is a blended learning class- online content MUST be completed no later than Friday, 4/28.  

Class Dates/times:

Friday, 4/28: 5-8pm

Saturday, 4/29: 10-6pm

Sunday, 4/30: 10-6pm

Monday, 5/1: 5-8pm

Tuesday, 5/2: 5-8pm

Monday, 5/8: Final Skills Test (by appointment)

Tuesday, 5/9: Final Skills Test (by appointment)  

Refunds: There are no refunds on program fees unless the class is cancelled. Once a participant has passed the prerequisites and the payment is processed, there are no refunds, even if you do not pass the class. 

Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class. Proof of age must be presented with registration (birth certificate, driver’s license, etc.)  

Class size is limited to the first 20 candidates who pass the prerequisites.  

Priority registration goes to those who plan on working at the Bret Harte Aquatic Center.  

*Prerequisite Requirement: Each participant (including re-certs) must pass a prerequisite skills test that includes the following:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates will swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke. Swim goggles may be used. *550 yards for Waterfront (Lake) Lifeguard certification.

2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.

3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds:

✓ Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed.

✓ Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.

✓ Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they can get a breath.

✓ Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
